Scammers, you are killing me. Murder in the first.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been in a state which can only be described as catatonia. I’m sleeping through my waking life. Big smiles for the Zoom cameras! Speak! In! Exclamation! Points! After years of a successful career and all the fancy Ivy League degrees, I still haven’t filed my taxes for the year because I can’t afford to pay for an accountant. But still, I persist because I have hope that I can somehow turn the beat around. Isn’t that the fiction we’re sold? Work harder and you’ll see the fruits of your labor. But what if you’re worked to the bone and nothing, zilch, nada. What then?

Blessed be the fruit, Capitalism. May the Lord open…his wallet.

Back during the pandemic, something magical happened. People told stories about their mundane days, their small lives, and I swathed myself in these minor comforts. People battling it out for toilet paper. People exuding a kindness that reminded me of the weeks after 9/11, when the city was still covered in soot and ash. I lived a mile from the Towers and there was this persistent smell. A weight no clinking beer bottles in outdoor cafes…
