It's astonishing that you're a historian and you would make a statement without having done any research. Also, that you feel comfortable leaning into stereotypes and reinforcing stigma.

I need not do the work for you, but there are plenty of reputable studies on the composition of the homeless population in the U.S., and they're not predominately addicts and people who suffer from mental illness. You only need to use google/google scholar to find the information.
