Agree with all of this.
I’m confused when people say medium doesn’t commission or pay for work directly. I’ve been paid by medium for my work on and off since 2013. I’m paid whenever I pitch stories to their in-house publications. I was paid when they featured my work in the now-defunct Collections.
This is why I avoid stories written about the platform because much of it is conjecture. And the “everyone who gets curated and published in the in-house pubs is a crap writer” is plain rude. Do they think insulting other writers and editors is helping them? Do they think articles about the platform will attract readers who don’t care how the platform works but paid to read good work?
I’ll never understand the demands of people who pay $60/year membership. I don’t demand The Paris Review publish my work because I subscribe to their publication.
My comment isn’t direct toward your exchange, it’s just a reaction to what I keep seeing in my feed. Anecdotally, a friend of mine joined the platform but cancelled her membership because she said there were too many articles on how to make money on medium and how medium is crap, etc. and she was like, why would I pay to read this?
